Ki Sui An Shakuhachi Dojo

Ronnie Nyogetsu Reishin Seldin is the head of the largest and most active shakuhachi Dojo in the world outside of Japan (Ki Sui An Shakuhachi Dojo). Nyogetsu has been teaching Shakuhachi full time since 1975.There are many different options for studying at the Ki Sui An Shakuhachi Dojo.

Weekly Lessons: used in the New York City and the Queens Dojo.

Monthly Lessons: available in the Philadelphia Dojo, the Baltimore Dojo, the Rochester Dojo, and the Syracuse, N.Y. Dojo .

Cassette Lessons: foręthose Shakuhachi students who live far from New York City.

Intensives: There are many Intensives held every year in various parts of the country

Progression: After completing the repertoire: Kinko-Ryu Honkyoku and Gaikyoku, Neza-Sa-Ha Ryu Honkyoku and Meian-style Honkyoku, going through the levels of Shoden-Beginner, Chuden-Intermediate, and Okuden-Advanced, the student achieves the level of Kaiden (can play all of the pieces). After an accelerated "teaching-level" course, the student can receive his GEMEI (professional name), and a teaching license at the level of Jun-Shihan. Kyo-Shin-An dojo.

Shakuhachi instruction in the traditional Kinko style. Over 40 Sankyoku pieces (Jiuta and Sokyoku,) and over 40 honkyoku are studied towards the Jun-Shi-Han certificate. Honkyoku lineage is from Jin Nyodo, which is primarily Meian ryu, and also includes Kinko and Kinpu ryu pieces. Students study weekly in one hour lessons. The dojo offers performance opportunities with student recitals, and workshops and masterclasses with visiting shakuhachi sensei throughout the year.

Tozan

 

Sholom Shozan Gold

The Tozan Shakuhachi school is the largest and most popular Shakuhachi school in Japan. Tozan Shakuhachi is notable for the fusing of Western structures and innovative techniques into the Shakuhachi tradition.

Students will learn both Tozan and Kinko Honkyoku (solo and duets), Sankyoku ensemble pieces, Japanese Folk music, and modern (Shinkyoku) music.

Students will also learn how to play Shakuhachi without pain or discomfort for maximum enjoyment.

Group lessons as well as private lessons are available. Free introductory lessons are offered by appointment only.
